5 sessions

Join Daphne for a fun introduction to the materials and mechanics of glazing in oil painting through “painting the figure in its environment.” This class is a dive into painting the figure and learning a new technique. No experience is necessary. You’ll focus on composition and value while working from the model. We’ll be painting from life but also allow our imagination free rein!

Glazing is a multi-step process in which you will paint the entire painting first in a grisaille (greys) underpainting. Daphne’s process for the grisaille is to use thin layers of black and white acrylic paint, often sanding the panel lightly between layers. This process of distressing the surface keeps things from feeling too precious and helps build up the painting as you reapply layers to get to your finished underpainting.

Once the underpainting is complete, you’ll glaze over the top in color with transparent oil paints, letting the values shine through.  At the end of the 5 sessions, you will have completed at least one finished painting.  Learning and understanding this glazing technique is a great addition to your creative arsenal. In this class you will learn how to prepare a surface for painting, develop your understanding of composition, work with a tonal underpainting in acrylic, and practice glazing oil color over a tonal underpainting to achieve a finished painting.
