Instant photography is our modern-day daguerreotype. Alone among photographic processes, instant photography results in a single, one-of-a kind image, on the spot within minutes. In an era of disposable imagery— when more photographs are taken in a single day than in the previous entire history of photography combined— instant film provides a unique perspective and way of working.

In this four-day workshop participants will work with artists EveNSteve (author Eve O. Schaub and artist Stephen Schaub) to explore the potential of instant photographic materials such as Polaroid and Instax. This course will emphasize building a mobile practice, outside-the-box printing techniques and seeing beyond the traditional photograph.

Students will be introduced to a large array of instant cameras from historic to modern as well as a variety of conversions that allow for additional creative control. Will include a discussion of collage, narrative and composition specific to instant materials as well as the use of tools such as temperature manipulation and iPhone apps.

Portfolio reviews (ten images or fewer) will be available.

This class is suitable for visual artists who use photography, or who want to, as well as those who work exclusively in photography. Instant material users of all levels are welcome. All class participants must have an instant camera, vintage or new, working with either Polaroid or Instax as well as a supply of film.

EveNSteve is the creative team of artist Stephen Schaub and author Eve O. Schaub. Their artworks combine photographic imagery with handwritten text to create evocative landscapes that tell stories and speak to history. Stephen Schaub was one of Polaroid’s ten featured artists for over a decade and his work is included in the Polaroid Collection. A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, his work has been exhibited in Asia and Europe as well as throughout the United States. Eve O. Schaub is an internationally published author and speaker. The author of Year of No Sugar (2014) and Year of No Clutter (2017), her most recent book is Year of No Garbage (2023). She has been featured in The New Yorker, USA Today and The Huffington Post. Since 2019 they have worked collaboratively making artworks under the name EveNSteve. Their exciting mixed-media works incorporate a variety of disciplines: photographic processes, filmmaking, works on paper, encaustic, creative and historical writing, and installation. EveNSteve’s work is in collections including The State of Vermont (Montpelier VT), and the MERZ Collection in Sanquhar, Scotland. Their films have been winners of Best Documentary Short in several film festivals. For more info please visit: evensteve.com
