There are many ways to join two pieces of wood, and for centuries the hand-cut dovetail reigned supreme. But it is the future now, and this class will not be about hand cut dovetails. In fact, this class will not focus on hand tools at all. We don’t cut wood anymore. That, my friend, is robot work.  We will use Fusion 360 to design intricate joinery for a small wooden box. Participants in this class will learn design and programming skills for CNC as well as the constraints of CNC routing for wood. We will use the Shaper Origin (handheld CNC machine), as well as CNC table router in the workshop. You can cut joints shaped like drips, like geometric shapes, even words written in the joinery of your box. The possibilities are endless, so get your imaginations ready.

***You will need a laptop with Fusion 360 downloaded, a 3-button mouse and an eagerness to learn. This workshop takes place in the Woodshop at Edgewood Farm.***

Coby Unger works full time at the MIT Hobby Shop teaching wood and metal working. He has extensive experience with CAD software from his experience working at Autodesk and Instructables and teaches a Fusion 360 class to his students at MIT. In his art practice, Coby enjoys creating work that asks a question or inspires whimsy. Most recently he was featured in the Boston Globe for creating chairs from decommissioned MBTA Red Line train seats. His work has been featured in the Society of Arts and Crafts, the Center for Art in Wood, and Art on the Trails, among others.
