Through lectures, PowerPoint presentations, and demonstration, students will learn the basic techniques of Chinese Calligraphy, its historical roots and development, and its importance in Chinese culture, especially its connection with painting, poetry, and education. This course will offer training in disciplined hand-eye coordination together with an appreciation for this ancient and contemporary art form. Students will learn how some western artists have been influenced and inspired by Chinese calligraphy and painting and have used these unique techniques in their own works. The core of this course is to create landscape and figure paintings based on the methods and techniques of Chinese calligraphy with a personal vision. Students will use traditional materials for Chinese calligraphy and materials of their choice to create the final project.
