Experiments with Cyanotype use the light of the Outer Cape to explore the early photographic process of cyanotype. Cyanotypes are iron based photographs, Prussian blue in color, made by placing objects or negatives onto a hand-coated surface and exposing them in ultraviolet light.  

We will make cyanotypes using found objects and negatives made in class. Students will learn to mix chemistry, coat paper and/or fabric, and expose cyanotypes using the sun or an ultraviolet light table. We will explore changing the color of cyanotypes using coffee, tea, and other natural toners. We will also discuss the long history of cyanotypes and their current popularity in the contemporary art world. 

Tina Tryforos is a photographer, educator, and book artist living in Rhode Island. Her many long-term projects encompass multi-decade, semi-documentary investigations of family events and rituals and abstract experiments using a variety of photographic processes. She is passionate about the natural world and human interaction with it. Tina is currently obsessed with how myths about the Greek goddess Persephone resonate today. Tina has an MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY and is the recipient of a 2020 Rhode Island State Council of the Arts Fellowship in Photography.  Learn more at tinatryforos.com
