The class will take a learning-by-doing approach, with an emphasis on process. Students will be taught a range of fabrication and construction methods starting with a classic subtractive form technique. We will be using rigid foam board as our carving material. Its easy to use and allows for quick results. Once we’ve completed carving the form, we will coat it with a combination of plaster and fiberglass to give it a solid plaster appearance. We will also be working with found objects. Sourcing from the abundance of material that surrounds us in our every day lives. Using a series of hand and power tools, we will investigate different ways of transforming and manipulating these found objects with the end goal of combining the manipulated found objects with the more traditional subtracted form. We will discuss the multidimensional relationship between form and meaning when potentially disparate objects exist within a work. Students will explore the social, cultural and personal implications of using found and domestic objects in conjunction with the carved form.
