This course is designed to introduce students to the most advanced tools in the wood shop. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a master woodworker, you will learn foundational 2D milling techniques using a Shaper Origin and Onefinity CNC. Through a hands-on assignment, you will learn the limitations of the machines and decide on your own project best suited for whatever you wish to learn. You will be introduced to the basic terminology, workflow, and thinking necessary to execute your own projects. This course will emphasize practical design choices, logical approaches to work holding, and creative use of the CNC as more than just a cutting machine.

We will start with producing a series of sample joinery, as well as some text carving. This exercise will introduce you to the concepts and limitations of the machine. Afterward, you will have the rest of the workshop to define and execute a project of your own choosing. Students can also be given a guided prompt which will give you exposure to the fundamentals. Throughout the week, I will be on standby to help you with anything, from creative design to execution.

Alex Infield is a recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied industrial design. A lifelong artist, his work seeks to push the boundaries of tools and technologies.
