Spend time creating paper shapes to print and block areas of color within monotype prints. During this workshop we will delve into color theory applied to monotype printmaking. Participants can expect to make a series of color monotypes, and to create a “family of shapes” that can be printed and reprinted after the workshop is done. Lines, shapes, stencils and edges all contribute to composing a monotype print. Learn innovative ways of printing and adhering collage-like papers while looking at color through the lens of color theory in a playful way. Akua Intaglio Inks are particularly well suited for exploring how to print subtle layers of color. We will be printing with PETG plates that are thin, transparent plastic. PETG is thin enough to print well either face up or face down for easy registration and printing of multiple color plates. We will print with complimentary and analogous colors by employing subtractive monotype techniques, while paying close attention to the edges of mask and stencil shapes. We’ll be adding surface rolls to integrate and harmonize these printed colors. Practice time will include mixing beautiful neutral grays and earth tones to gain control and confidence while printing with color.
