This five day workshop enables students of all levels who love to paint, an opportunity to become familiar with the three most popular water media: watercolor, gouache and acrylics. Through a step by step approach consisting of demonstrations, guided exercises and painting assignments participants will become familiar with the unique characteristics, advantages and limitations of each medium, so they can make informed choices between them. With ACRYLIC, learn impasto techniques, blending versis layering colors with glazing, use of mediums and tools to create texture. WATERCOLOR is the trasparant medium. learn techniques for controlling hard and soft edges, painting wet-into-wet, washes and dry brush. GOUACHE is know for its rich, flat, opaque, non reflective color. It lends itself to tiling in addition to blending on palette. Participants will learn which surfaces and brushes are best for each medium, the relative permanence of each, when and how they might be combined for special effects and their suitability for use in different situations.

Judith Simonian is a painter born in Los Angeles, California where she began her career. She has shown work in galleries and museums in the US and internationally that include The New Museum, NY, PS1 Contemporary Art Center/ Museum of Modern Art, NY, San Francisco Museum of Art, CA, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, CA. and The Seibu Museum in Japan Her awards include a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, NEA, NYFA, Colene Brown Prize, Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grants, and residency fellowships that include Yaddo, Macdowell, Dora Maar House, Menerbes, France, BAO Institute in Cassis, France, and Fundacion Valparaiso, Spain. During her recent 12 year Survey show at 1GAP (Grand Army Plaza) she was delighted to sit in conversation with David Cohen of ArtCritical. She is currently preparing for a solo exhibit at JJ Murphy Gallery in NYC.
