This workshop is a deep dive into etching on copper plates. Using a variety of contemporary materials and processes, participants will learn a wide range of mark making techniques that bring line, brush marks, tone and texture into your intaglio prints. BIG (Baldwin’s Intaglio Ground), coffee, sandpaper, floor polish, and wax are just a few of the materials you’ll explore to bring your etchings to life. We’ll begin by looking at a curated selection of etchings to inspire and excite and then get right down to plate preparation and mark making. Your image will evolve over the course of the workshop as you learn to add texture through soft ground techniques and tone with non-traditional aquatint methods. This workshop is suitable for those new to etching as well as artists who are familiar with the process but want to explore safer, less toxic and more sustainable approaches to the medium.
