Writers often think of themselves as plotters (the people with post-it notes all over their walls) or "pantsers" (flying by the seat of your pants--hello, that's me). There are pros and cons to both methods, but it's helpful in either case to consider the bare bones of your story, the scaffolding, or the "shape." Whether you're in the middle of a project or just starting out, you can think about the architecture of your manuscript from the promise of the beginning, through the messy middle, and toward an ending that feels complete. In this workshop, plotters and pantsers will unite. We'll map out our unwieldy narratives, discuss framing devices and shapes, look for ways to find the story in what we've already written, and finish the week feeling like we have a better idea of how to move forward. Come prepared to share the first few pages of your project, try out a few writing exercises, and provide and receive constructive feedback.
We will workshop up to ten pages of fiction or narrative nonfiction. Attendees should come prepared with copies for the group.
