Clay is a fantastic medium for interpreting the human body and has been used throughout the ages to observe and celebrate the human spirit. In this five-day workshop you’ll learn the essential principles of figure sculpting and then apply them to creating a clay figure from real life. This workshop is aimed at beginners, however ALL levels are welcomed and encouraged to attend! During this workshop, you’ll work with sculptor Neil Grant to learn about gesture, proportion, and lines of grace, along with a little bit of anatomy, as you produce figures in clay. In the second half of the week, you’ll be working with a live model to direct and inspire your work. The class atmosphere is informative, relaxed, and fun, with plenty of demonstrations from Neil and one-on-one instruction as you work. Clay, tools and stands will be provided but students are welcome to bring their own favorite tools if they have them.
Neil Grant is a national award-winning figurative sculptor who lives on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he loves to teach classes and workshops, when not working in his own studio. He commonly produces artwork in ceramic, resin, and bronze, and is represented by Bowersock Gallery in Provincetown. Neil has studied under nationally recognized sculptors such as Philippe Faraut and Brian Booth Craig, and most recently was the curator of the ‘I Feel The Earth Move: A Northeast Regional Ceramics Exhibition’ at Cotuit Center for the Arts.
