The wheel is a fabulous tool to initiate round objects. The knife, a scoring tool, joining slip and willingness to “think outside the circle,” will introduce us to a wide-open universe of asymmetrical volumetric forms. Like a tailor measures a client’s body, we shall take measure of a vessel’s capacity to pour, mix, serve or bake. Along the way, we’ll gain a new understanding of pottery form, its ability to capture and displace space.
Jim Lawton is a retired professor of ceramics from UMass Dartmouth. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, Washington D.C; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; L.A. County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Icheon World Ceramic Center, South Korea, among others; and numerous private collections. Elected to the International Academy of Ceramics in 2012. Lawton will be awarded “Excellence in Teaching” at the 2025 NCECA Conference in Salt Lake City.
