Make it big! This workshop will focus on making large scale prints printed with a steam roller. Students are encouraged to scale up their designs, all the way up to full-sheets (4x8’) of MDF. We will be primarily using the process of relief printing, but students will also have the potential of incorporating and exploring large scale monotype printing. Relief printing is one of the most enduring printmaking techniques and is renowned for its flexibility as a medium capable of a variety effects. Students will explore the process of relief printing using large sheets of MDF. We will cover preparation of blocks, transferring designs, carving, registration, and printing.

A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print made by applying ink directly to the plate or block, creating a unique and singular print. It is a great way to add color to a print.

While this class is appropriate for all levels, some familiarity with relief carving is encouraged. Carving a relief block is a physical activity and students should feel confident in their ability to do the necessary carving.
