Learn to make well-tuned ocarinas (closed vessel flutes)! This class will focus on creating and tuning ocarinas to achieve best sound quality. After mastering single chambered ocarinas, students will explore double and triple chambered ocarinas. We will experience both milk firing and raku firing of completed ocarinas. The final session will focus on post-firing tuning and adjustments. The finale will be a joyful class concert!

Kathi Tighe began making fine-tuned single and multiple chamber ocarinas in the late 1980s. She learned from ocarina (or ‘huaca’) master, Sharon Rowell. She’s taught many workshops on ocarinas and ceramic musical instruments, most recently at the Harvard Ceramics Program in Allston, MA. Kathi is on staff at the Harvard Ceramics Program, where she creates wheel-thrown and altered functional pottery. Kathi also sings in several Boston area choral groups.
