Artists will use multiple processes to create images on paper exploring line, texture, surface, and structure in both class sessions. We will be assembling, disassembling and transforming works on paper. Materials used in the class include encaustic, charcoal, tape, coffee and tea, drywall compound, acrylic mediums, graphite and/or any of the other materials listed below. The class goal is to help you learn new approaches/processes that you can take back to your studio. The class spans two days. The class will also include several quick exercises exploring drawing ideas. The class will include reviewing each other’s work at the end of the second day.

 Materials List:

  • 5-10 sheets of paper cut to 11 x 15 or smaller.
    Good papers include: Stonehenge, Rives BFK, Rives Heavyweight, Arches Cover, or any drawing paper.
    Use what you might have. You could also use Arches Oil Paper if you don’t have any of the above.

  • 5 pieces of compressed charcoal

  • 1 lb. of encaustic medium and a small amount of encaustic paints.

  • Encaustic brushes

  • Graphite pencils

  • Colored pencils

  • Small jar of gesso. White acrylic paint will also work.

  • Acrylic paint

  • Shoe polish

  • India ink

  • Vegetable matter such as beets or anything that stains (coffee or tea would work)

  • Non stick tape

  • A board that is at least 12 x 16

  • Cardboard

  • Drywall compound

  • A spray bottle filled with water

  • A small brayer

  • Newsprint

  • An assortment of brushes

  • sticks, chopsticks

  • Paper towels

  • 1 sandwich baggie

  • gloves

Jeffrey Hirst has exhibited his work throughout the United States and Europe since 1990 and has his MFA from Louisiana State University and BFA from the University of Minnesota. His work has been showcased at national and international venues including the Minneapolis Institute of Art; The Holter Museum, Helen, Montana; Addington Gallery, Chicago, McKinney Contemporary, Dallas, McLean Project for the Art, McLean, VA, and Bienal do Douro, Portugal. Hirst has been a visiting artist at universities around the United States conducting painting and printmaking workshops and has taught workshops at NCSW-Bennington College in VT, Arrowmont School for the Arts in TN, Truro Center for the Arts in MA, Cullowhee Mountain Arts in NC, and has been an annual presenter at the International Encaustic Conference in MA. Hirst is the owner of Hirst Printmaking, a printmaking shop specializing in intaglio, hybrid processes, screenprinting, and experimental approaches towards combining printmaking and painting. In 2005, Hirst pioneered the process of combining silkscreen and encaustic painting and has conducted workshops on the process throughout the United States. Hirst is a recipient of the Minnesota State Arts Board grant, the DCASE City of Chicago Individual Artist grant and was awarded a fellowship residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland. Hirst is represented by Addington Gallery in Chicago and Brandt-Roberts Galleries in Columbus, OH. His work is in numerous public and private collections including Arcstone Technologies, Grant Thornton International, Great River Energy, SAP America, and Southern Graphics Council.
