This workshop offers participants a deeper understanding of how to create paintings that suggest optical depth and dimension. Emphasis will be placed on composition and expressing meaning through an exploration of accumulating marks and drawing at varying levels. Building paintings from the bottom up, students will have plenty of time to explore and develop their visual vocabulary on multiple panels. Techniques include creating a smooth, even surface; ways to fuse lightly; working with ink, metallic foil, and Pigment Sticks; and building translucent colored layers.
Dietlind Vander Schaaf holds an MFA from the University of San Francisco and an MA from the University of Southern Maine. Her work has been described as the transformation of “disparate objects into elegantly simple compositions of pattern and grace” (Artscope). Vander Schaaf has been featured in Maine Home + Design, Decor Maine, Downeast Magazine, UPPERCASE, and Artscope. She is a Core Instructor for R&F Handmade Paints, an Ampersand Ambassador, and the former president of New England Wax.
