In the Western art tradition, drawing has long been seen as subordinate to painting, something to be learned before picking up the paintbrush. But in contemporary practice, there’s an exciting synergy between the possibilities of the drawn mark and the richness of painted passages of color. This workshop will focus on the intersection between drawing and painting, considering the work of contemporary painters who blur the line between drawing and painting. Using a variety of media, we’ll create fresh works that incorporate the energy of drawing and the vibrancy of painting. The goal is to create a body of exploratory work that can refresh and revitalize our at-home studio practice. We'll work from the landscape, engage with self-portraiture and still life, and work from reference photos. The workshop is open to artists of all levels.

Peter Hocking is a painter and writer on Cape Cod. His work is concerned with nature, place, poetics, and identity. He's a founding board member of Provincetown Commons, an economic development center for the creative economy.  He's represented by Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, MA. He taught part-time at RI School of Design from 1997- 2022. From 2003-2021 he was full-time faculty in Goddard College’s MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts program. He was director of RISD’s Office of Public Engagement (2007-11), and Associate Dean of the College & Director of the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University (1988-2005).
